Fishing at The Leaf River Estuary Lodge

Quebec

7-day tour: For Beginners, For Amateurs, For Anglers, For Family, For Children

Your Inuit guide will be intimately familiar with the wildlife, the land and the optimal fishing techniques. A trip with us exposes clients to the Inuit culture, which most find is a unique and enjoyable experience. At the Leaf River Estuary Lodge (LREL), we limit the number of clients at any one time to 6, and in special cases, 8. We’re family- and community-run, believing this to be the best way to conserve the environment’s resources and our fishing and hunting traditions. Dates and spaces currently availabe: July 10 to 16, space for 4 anglers July 17 to 23, space for 2 anglers July 24 to 30, space for 3 anglers July 31 to August 6, space for 4 anglers After August 7 the schedule is flexible. What makes us unique: 1. We are Inuit owned and operated.Staying with us contributes to our community and helps preserve our way of life. 2. At the Leaf River Estuary Lodge you’ll catch Arctic char as well as Atlantic salmon and sea-run speckled trout; all in amazing quantities and size. It’s truly “World Class” fishing! 3. You’ll experience the highest tides in the world, higher than those in the Bay of Fundy. Here the tide often exceeds 15 meters (50 feet). 4. We offer the lowest rates and the best fishing among the outfitters in Nunavik. All supplies come either by sea or air, so operating costs are much higher than those down south, i.e., closer to Montreal. Our Special Assistant, Hank Smith, will make reservations for you on First Air, for travel from Montreal to Kuujjuaq and return, and on Air Inuit for travel from Kuujjuaq to Tasiujaq and return. You’ll be met in Kuujjuaq by Craig Lingard, our local coordinator, or someone he designates. He’ll ensure that you and your luggage make a smooth transition to the Air Inuit counter, located across the room in the same terminal, for your flight to Tasiujq. If there’s enough time between your arrival in Kuujjuaq and your departure to Tasiujaq, Craig may arrange a short tour of Kuujjuaq. The Air Inuit flight to Tasiujaq is very short, about 25 min, at relatively low altitude so you’ll get a good view of the landscape and the glacial action that formed it. When you arrive at the Tasiujaq airport, you’ll be met by a member of JBCO. After a brief tour of the village you’ll be taken to the launch site, about 3 km north of town, and go by boat to the Leaf River Estuary Lodge. The lodge is equipped with flush toilets and hot water for showers at the end of the day. Hot water is supplied by a solar hot-water system, with propane backup. Other key facilities include: a satellite phone for emergencies, walkie-talkies for general communication between boats and with shore, first aid kits, fire extinguishers and electricity, via solar and wind, with battery storage and a diesel generator as backup. For fishing at the Leaf River estuary, a salmon license is required. JBCO strongly recommends that clients purchase the “catch-and-release” salmon license. This license allows you to keep and take home 5 arctic char and 15 trout or 8 Kg of trout plus 1 char, but requires that all salmon be returned to the water. Catch-and-release licenses can be purchased at the lodge. Since the Atlantic salmon is an endangered species, we strongly recommend that clients who come with a full salmon license also release salmon back to the water. In Nunavik, the use of treble hooks is illegal; only single-point hooks are allowed. A lure can have at most two single-point hooks. If your lures are equipped with treble hooks, it’s essential that you either replace them with single hooks, which are available at the lodge, or cut off at least one of the points in order to comply with the law. The trip includes: • Round trip transportation from Tasiujaq to the Leaf River Estuary Lodge • Coordination services in Kuujjuaq • Accommodations in heated cabins • Hearty home-cooked meals in our dining facility • Hot showers and flush toilets • One guide per two fishermen with freighter canoe and outboard motor or one guide per three fishermen in the larger aluminum boat • Landing nets and life jackets • Conservation and preparation of fish for homebound transportation
